Which Roads Require a Vignette in Switzerland?
All national motorways and expressways (Nationalstraßen / autoroutes nationales, marked with green signs). Cantonal roads and alpine pass roads (Gotthard pass road, Furka, Grimsel) are free. Note: the Gotthard Road Tunnel charges an additional toll (~CHF 8–14) on top of the vignette.
Vehicles: All motor vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 t — each trailer needs its own separate vignette. Vehicles over 3.5 t pay the LSVA (heavy-vehicle distance charge) instead — no vignette required.
How to Buy the Switzerland Vignette
The easiest way is to buy online before you travel. You can also purchase at petrol stations near the border.
Buy the e-vignette online at e-vignette.ch (linked to your licence plate — no sticker needed).
Alternatively, buy a physical sticker at Swiss border crossings, petrol stations, Swiss post offices (La Poste / Post), or at motoring clubs (TCS, ADAC, ÖAMTC) in neighbouring countries.
If buying a physical sticker: affix it to the inside of the windscreen in the top-right or top-centre before entering a national motorway. It must be stuck to glass, not to a separate sun-visor or film.
Once the sticker is applied to the windscreen, it cannot be transferred — removing it destroys the sticker and voids its validity.

Fine amount
CHF 200 fine plus mandatory purchase of the vignette (CHF 40) on the spot — total minimum CHF 240. Border officials can prevent entry until paid.
How enforcement works
Federal Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) staff check vehicles at all border crossings. The sticker must be visible on the inside of the windscreen — officers carry UV lamps to verify authenticity. Cantonal police also conduct random ANPR checks on the highway network. Switzerland is increasingly deploying plate-reading technology alongside manual checks.
