Which Roads Require a Vignette in Bulgaria?
All motorways (A1 Trakia, A2 Hemus, A3, A4, A5 Maritsa, A6, A7 Lyulin), expressways, and most first-class (I-клас) and second-class (II-клас) national roads. Third-class roads and municipal streets are exempt. Bulgaria's vignette covers a much broader road network than most other countries.
Vehicles: Category 1: motor vehicles with 4+ wheels up to 3,500 kg. Motorcycles and vehicles with fewer than 4 wheels are EXEMPT. Vehicles over 3,500 kg use a separate distance-based toll (TollRoad system).
How to Buy the Bulgaria Vignette
The easiest way is to buy online before you travel. You can also purchase at petrol stations near the border.
Visit web.bgtoll.bg (official National Toll Administration portal, available in Bulgarian and English).
Select your vehicle category (Category 1 for standard passenger cars).
Enter your licence plate, choose the vignette duration, and pay by card.
The e-vignette is activated immediately in the system. You will receive a confirmation. No physical document is required.
You can also use the bgtoll.bg mobile app for quick purchases.
Where to Buy in Person
- Petrol stations throughout Bulgaria and at border crossings (Lukoil, OMV, Shell, Neste)
- Post offices (Български пощи)
- Bank branches (selected)
- Border crossing kiosks operated by the Road Infrastructure Agency
Fines for Driving Without a Vignette in Bulgaria
Fine amount
300 BGN to 3,000 BGN (~€150 to €1,500). A reduced "compensatory fee" of ~70 BGN (~€36) can be paid immediately by first-time offenders instead of the full fine. Officers can prevent you from continuing until paid.
How enforcement works
Bulgaria's Road Infrastructure Agency operates approximately 300 stationary ANPR cameras plus 100+ mobile enforcement units deployed on motorways and national roads. Licence plates are checked 24/7 against the e-vignette database. Real-time alerts can trigger on-the-spot checks within minutes.
Important Tips & Notes
Motorcycles are EXEMPT from the Bulgarian e-vignette.
New prices came into effect on 1 May 2025, including a new 1-day option (8 BGN). Previous annual price was 87 BGN, now 97 BGN.

Bulgaria covers a much wider road network than most countries — not just motorways but also first- and second-class national roads.
