Which Roads Require a Vignette in Austria?
All motorways (Autobahnen, marked A) and expressways (Schnellstraßen, marked S) operated by ASFINAG. Provincial and federal B/L roads are free. Note: several mountain routes (Brenner, Tauern, Arlberg, Karawanken) charge additional section tolls on top of the vignette.
Vehicles: All motor vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW, including motorcycles (cheaper tariff). Vehicles over 3.5 t use the electronic GO-box system instead.
How to Buy the Austria Vignette
The easiest way is to buy online before you travel. You can also purchase at petrol stations near the border.
Go to shop.asfinag.at (available in English, German, and other languages).
Enter your vehicle's licence plate number and country of registration.
Select the validity period (10 days, 2 months, or 1 year) and pay by credit/debit card.
The digital vignette is linked to your plate immediately, but driving on Austrian motorways is only permitted 18 hours after purchase (consumer protection rule). Plan ahead.
You will receive a confirmation email — save it. No physical sticker is required.

Fines for Driving Without a Vignette in Austria
Fine amount
€120 on-the-spot substitute toll. If unpaid, an administrative fine of up to €3,000 is issued. Officers can also impound your vehicle.
How enforcement works
ASFINAG operates over 1,000 ANPR camera gantries at all motorway entry points and at regular intervals along the network. Every vehicle is checked electronically in real time against the vignette database — there are no toll booths. Physical sticker vignettes are still sold; improper affixing is treated as no vignette.
Important Tips & Notes
The digital vignette activates 18 hours after online purchase — do not drive on the motorway immediately after buying.
Physical stickers are still available at petrol stations; they must be affixed to the windscreen before driving.
Some tunnels and mountain roads (e.g. Arlberg, Brenner) charge separate section tolls in addition to the vignette.
Motorcycles need the same vignette but at a lower price (€5.40 for 10 days, €13.70 for 2 months, €36.20 annual).
Disabled persons with a parking pass can apply for a free annual vignette via the Austrian Social Ministry (Sozialministerium).
